Mission Trip to MCCS, July 2010

During June 12-19, 2010, three members of New Life Deaf Fellowship (NLDF) in San Antonio, joined a larger team from Virginia on a mission trip to the school for Deaf children in Rio Bravo, Mexico. The school, "Mexico, Centros Cristianos para Sordomudos" (MCCS) is a ministry of the International Christian Centers for the Deaf . Team members from NLDF are Sam & Debbie Carpenter (hearing) and Mike Morgan (Deaf). We conducted a 3-day VBS in sign language, participated in "fun day" with the kids, and worked on ongoing construction projects for the campus which, though operational, is still under construction. MCCS is a residential school for Deaf children who otherwise would receive no education as the public school system makes no accommodation for the Deaf. This is the fourth consecutive year NLDF has participated in this mission trip and plans are already underway for next year. The school is funded entirely through donations and this year we learned that there are times when classes must be suspended due to lack of funds to provide food for lunch. Students attend school through sponsors who pay to sponsor them. Five sponsors at $25 each, per month, are required to fully sponsor one child at the school. Though there are not enough sponsors to cover expenses for all the children, no child is ever denied enrollment at the school.
